Graphic Design...

While we don’t want to overdo it, a few well-placed graphic elements can make the difference between good and great on your site. Make Sites can create a vast series of images from buttons to clip-art, fonts and banners, designed solely for web use.

Flash-antics: New website

May 6th, 2009 by Makis

My long awaited portfolio for my flash-related work is online.

It’s using my very own KISSCMS as a back-end and a collection of PHP, JavaScript and Flash widgets running on the website along with it.

For the visual side, I wanted something minimalistic, and flashy cocky kind of way. I think my “mad scientist look here gives the final touch in that regards ;)

Foitites.gr : Re-launch

October 5th, 2008 by Makis

This is a community site directed solely to greek university students - it aims to connect students from different schools around the country and create online relationships and debates. The first version of the site was created back in 2003, when social networks where more of a concept than a reality and after 5 years it was time for a fresh start.

I always had a plan to update the site at some point and then I came across Elgg, a social networking platform that is built with the latest font-end and back-end standards. XHTML compliant, MVC architecture and with many of the popular community services (blog, friends, groups, forums) embedded into one fine package. I knew I had to get my hands dirty with it and dissect it bit by bit. And this site, being a side-project in my schedule, was a perfect opportunity to utilize the platform and extend on it for my specific needs.

I created a new visual interface and did the greek translation for the front-end. In the background I had to change the functionality in some of the modules as they are transformed for the niche target group, for example the user groups became educational institutions and had to operate in a different way.

Technically it was educational as intended and I gathered the experience I wanted from the platform. Visually it was a pleasure to work with a standards-compliant design and make my job applying the new graphic elements simple.

CommonCode.info

This website had been online for a while now but was never promoted as a resource site and was mainly used as a private tool for my online work. Now its been styled visually and released as a public service:

It is basically a database of code snippets I’ve gathered throughout the years of programming. Most of this code was resourced online at some point in the past so I’m simply putting online all that knowledge in one central place.

But on the development side I just created a skin for MediaWiki, to make the whole experience more comfortable.

Am I games

May 22nd, 2008 by Makis

Here is my web front for submitting my game development work. I aim in producing games that have their own unique character and sometimes extend the lines of game development by introducing new elements never seen before in video games.

For the website I did the custom graphic design, used Template Blocks as the template back-end and wrote the required content. Some additional JavaScript was used to enhance visually the site.

Perhaps I should explain the background I chose as it may seem out of place at first glance. It’s a subtle reminder of the subtitle (Virtual Experience Games) - the scenery is fictional and can replicate itself infinitely, yet it is realistic enough to convince the visitor it is a real city…

Template Blocks: website

April 20th, 2008 by Makis

I just finalized the website promoting a new script called “Template Blocks”. It’s a visual template engine powered by an interactive AJAX interface and a PHP+MySQL back-end.

This script is released as open source and the first version will be online the following days. The website itself uses the template engine (of course) and apart from that I also created a new graphic design and written all the content.

Hopefully the site will make an impact to the online community - I’ll most likely be submitting posts here for each update released.
