Flash animation...

It has been for long the flagship of media rich content for the web, but Flash has matured and is more than a flashy animation or media file. We have created complete applications with it in the past and have the experience to merge it into your website layout so it becomes an asset to the overall design and not an annoyance.

Flash-antics: New website

May 6th, 2009 by Makis

My long awaited portfolio for my flash-related work is online.

It’s using my very own KISSCMS as a back-end and a collection of PHP, JavaScript and Flash widgets running on the website along with it.

For the visual side, I wanted something minimalistic, and flashy cocky kind of way. I think my “mad scientist look here gives the final touch in that regards ;)

TravelNT – Red Centre Microsite

August 27th, 2008 by Makis

One of the major websites promoting Australian tourism, TravelNT, created a micro-site to advertise the merits of Alice Springs and its surrounding area in central Australia. I developed the main flash element appearing in those pages:

Get Adobe Flash PlayerThis item requires the latest version of Adobe’s Flash Player.
Please download it from www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer and refresh this page once installation is complete.

I used Actionscript 3 to script the animation sequences and implement the interactivity. Many of the contents are loaded from external files, an XML file for the menu and text, FLV files for the videos and SWF files for slideshows. I was given the initial concept of the blurring transitions but felt that I had to experiment with the speeds and prioritizing the movements to achieve a smooth transition between the sub-pages.

Overall it was a small, useful app I enjoyed working on.

Tank A Day: Water-saving Quiz

August 15th, 2008 by Makis

The core of the Tank A Day website is the water-saving quiz. Students are called to test their knowledge and gain the right for their school to win a water tank. This is the main purpose for the user registration and the other information that is available on the site…

I was called on this project for what seemed to be a simple upgrade – the addition of two age groups instead of just one. This led to a series of updates that ultimately changed the quiz to an unrecognized state. The new features where demanding but brought the experience to new standards visually. Unfortunately the old structure the quiz was still relying on (timelined AS2) couldn’t handle the new additions perfectly. Since there wasn’t any planning to create it from scratch in AS3 I tried to balance the opposing factors of the app to achieve the best possible results.

TuneMo – Too Hot for TV

June 6th, 2008 by Makis

This was the second set of flash interfaces I created for TuneMo. It was a complete re-write over the first set as it was structured differently and

Again this was all XML-driven, the playlist and content, and it is skinnable with all the assets loaded from external files. I spent some extra time fine tuning the animation sequence and creating custom elements like the video control buttons outside the player.

TuneMo – Flash Interface

May 12th, 2008 by Makis

This was created for TuneMo, a mobile content company releasing their content to a worldwide scale. It was used as a landing page from online ad campaigns so the company wanted something eye-catching and simple to use:

This is a completely skinnable interface, which means all the visual elements are loaded from external files and can be replaced pretty easily. The content for the application and the playlist of the videos is driven through XML files. Custom actionscript code was needed for the creation of the gallery and the animation sequences.

It started as a small side-project but ended up being quite demanding and time-consuming. But it was nice to exercise my AS2 skills once again…
